FAQ
How do I get to Kanditheemu?
All international visitors arrive at Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé. From there you can reach Kanditheemu by domestic flight to Hanimaadhoo followed by a 45–60 minute speedboat, by direct speedboat from Malé (4–5 hours), or by public ferry on select days.
Do I need a visa for the Maldives?
No advance visa is required. All nationalities receive a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival, provided you have a passport valid for at least 6 months, a confirmed return ticket, accommodation booking, and have completed the IMUGA Traveller Declaration online within 96 hours before arrival.
When is the best time to visit Kanditheemu?
November to April is the dry season — calm seas, clear skies, and ideal conditions for diving and snorkeling. May to October is the green season with occasional rain showers, fewer tourists, and better prices.
Is Kanditheemu a local island or a resort?
Kanditheemu is an inhabited local island in North Miladhunmadulu Atoll. You'll stay in guesthouses or boutique hotels run by the local community and experience authentic Maldivian life — quite different from the private-island resort experience.
What should I wear on the island?
Kanditheemu is a Muslim community, so light clothing covering shoulders and knees is appropriate in the village. Swimwear is welcome on the designated bikini beach. Bring breathable cotton or linen, a light cover-up, and comfortable sandals.
Is alcohol available?
No. Alcohol is not sold or served on local islands in the Maldives. However, many excursion boats and nearby resort day-trips do serve alcohol — ask your hotel for options.
What currency is used and are credit cards accepted?
The local currency is Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), but US Dollars are widely accepted. Most guesthouses, dive centers, and restaurants accept Visa and Mastercard. Carry some USD cash for tips, the local market, and small purchases.
Is the tap water safe to drink?
We recommend bottled or filtered water. Most accommodations provide complimentary drinking water for guests.
Is there Wi-Fi and mobile coverage?
Yes. All guesthouses and most cafés offer free Wi-Fi, and 4G coverage is reliable across the island. Local SIM cards from Dhiraagu or Ooredoo are available at MLE airport on arrival.
What activities are available on Kanditheemu?
Snorkeling, scuba diving, manta and whale shark expeditions, sunset cruises, fishing trips, sandbank picnics, and dolphin watching. The house reef is excellent and several world-class dive sites are within easy reach.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes — comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation and water sports is strongly recommended. Diving insurance (e.g. DAN) is required by most dive centers if you plan to dive.
What is the electricity supply like?
230V, 50Hz. Plug types D and G (UK-style 3-pin) are most common. Bring a universal adapter if you're traveling from a country that uses different plugs.
How long should I stay?
We recommend at least 5–7 nights to fully enjoy the island, the diving, and several excursions. Shorter stays of 3–4 nights work well for travelers combining Kanditheemu with another destination.
Can children visit Kanditheemu?
Absolutely — Kanditheemu is family-friendly with shallow lagoons ideal for kids. Most guesthouses can arrange family rooms and child-friendly excursions.
What language do people speak?
Dhivehi is the local language, but English is widely spoken in guesthouses, restaurants, and dive centers. A few words of Dhivehi (like 'shukuriyaa' for thank you) are always appreciated.
